Wild Mustang horses, a symbol of our western heritage

wild mustang foalWildmustang.org is a site dedicated to the preservation and ethical treatment of the Wild Mustang herds in North America.
A symbol of our western heritage, Wild Mustangs were brought here by early Spanish Settlers.  Originally tied to Iberian horses, these once domestic animals either escaped, were released or stolen from their owners and flourished in North America.  Soon the horses became the main mode of transportation for American Indians, allowing them to travel easily and  to hunt more successfully.  They also continued as the dominate mode of transportation for early American settlers.  Today the fate of these majestic animals is  questionable.  Since the animals were considered Feral (non native) by our

government, they could be hunted and captured without penalty.  Many ranchers considered them pests and they were a prime competitor for the livestock food sources.  Soon the vast herds dwindled down to small localized populations and their existence.  In 1959 the US government adopted laws to assist in protecting these animals.  In 1971 the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro act was adopted to manage the dwindling population.  Wildmustangs.org was established to educate, provide information and assist in the protection of our Wild Horse Population.
